I hear a variation on this “not really doing marketing” theme quite often – and a very common one is “I let my product do the talking, it’s the best on the market”. But all I’m actually hearing is that you have this great product and you put your heart and soul into it and you then decide not to tell anyone about it.
As a VA I specialise in working with businesses that “don’t really do” some particular aspect of their business. I do their bookkeeping – because telling the Tax Man you don’t really do bookkeeping isn’t an option and I do their client scheduling – because telling people you don’t do appointments again isn’t really an option. So why do you feel like not doing marketing is an option?
No one knows your business better than you; you live, eat, sleep and breath it. Why do you think you can hand over marketing to a stranger regardless of how good their marketing is? I was approached last year by a very busy man who wanted to hand over his website and marketing and just leave me to it. No input from him, just go and do. I will explain it to you like I explained it to him “This is not how it works.”
You know your marketing message, your product, your customers and why they buy from you (it was in your business plan) and if you don’t know what these are then how on earth will anyone else? Without these you can’t get your message across. So have a think and you may be surprised to find out that once you have a clear idea of what you are getting out – there will be quite a bit of marketing that you can do!
And the bits you can’t, well that’s when you can get someone in to help!
